Powering our Future

Outer Hebrides: Powering our Future

Over the next decade there is an unprecedented level of investment planned across the Outer Hebrides, particularly on the Isle of Lewis where a series of significant renewable energy projects and supporting deployments are anticipated. They include:

  • a 1.8GW HVDC interconnector, sub-station and supporting infrastructure;
  • depending on final build-out, c.450MW of terrestrial on-shore wind on three sites - Druim Leathann Wind Farm, Stornoway Wind Farm and Uisenis Wind Farm;
  • depending on final build-out, c.2.8GW of Offshore Wind (bottom-fixed and floating) with option to lease subject to consent on three sites; and
  • a three-phase construction of a green hydrogen production hub – initial local market offtake, conversion of the Stornoway Town Centre Gas Network from propane to hydrogen, and culminating in high-volume hydrogen or ammonia export.

This could represent the largest ever private sector investment into the Outer Hebrides and coincide with a further series of significant investments, such as the activity being delivered through the Islands Growth Deal by the UK and Scottish Governments.

'Outer Hebrides: Powering our Future' is a mechanism to ensure our local communities and organisations:

  • have access to clear and consistent information on all major projects in one place
  • have the opportunity to be a key part of the supply chains
  • have easy access to all the projects' own websites in one place
  • remain front and centre of any activity associated with the projects.

Developer Principles

Each of the major projects are planned to occur around a similar timescale. Challenges and opportunities are easily apparent with such a requirement for people, material and logistics. A Major Developers Forum (MDF) was established by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, UHI NWH and Stornoway Port Authority to acknowledge and address these challenges.

As part of the MDF a series of Developer Principles were established; a framework which developers have agreed to, outlining what the Outer Hebrides expect from all major projects.
